Rathmullan House Hotel, Donegal

An original Georgian building provides an atmospheric core to this outstanding house that has been looked after for 2 generations by the Wheeler family who have lovingly restored and transformed it into one of Donegal’s loveliest hotels.

Rathmullan House is the perfect location to reach the 36 named discovery points in this beautiful county. Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way is filled with stunning surprises from Malin Head to Fanan Head and Inishowen and Slieve League. With spectacular scenery all around there is no shortage of spectacular sights to enchant you.

The hotel is situated in 7 acres in the sleepy village of Rathmullan. A quiet walk along Batt’s Walk will lead you down through the woods to the 2 mile stretch of beach which has been designated Blue flag status.

The gardens really show the care and attention that has been given over the last 50 years by the Wheeler family from the Tranquility garden and the fountain to the beautifully kept Walled Garden which provides some of the ingredients for the Hotel’s meals, so you may just bump into one of the Chef’s picking some fruit and vegetables for your meal that evening.

Its stunning lounges remain true to their original design and are a joy to relax in, sitting by the open fires, whether it be in the Raja room with its colonial Indian design, the library where you can curl up with a good book or enjoy quiet reflection in the adult only drawing room.

The bedrooms are beautifully styled and all needs are catered for, whether it is singles, couples, families and there is even a dog friendly option.

The Cook and Gardener restaurant provides the perfect setting to enjoy locally sourced food that is cooked to the highest standard. The views stretch out over Lough Swilly, whilst the tented ceiling dotted with hundreds of fairy lights and the classic wooden floors allow you to unwind as soon as you take your seat.

The Tap room provides an informal casual dining option focusing on stone baked pizzas, baked in the outdoor wood fired oven washed down with craft beers from Kinnegar Brewery on tap. Batt’s Bar is open daily between12-4:30 for tea, coffee and light refreshments. In the evening you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and after dinner you can enjoy post dinner coffee and petit fours.

Whilst the inviting waters of Lough Swilly may be an option, those who prefer more temperate waters will enjoy the 15m indoor heated swimming pool that is open between 8am and 8pm on a daily basis.

The hotel is just a short walk from the village where there is no shortage of watering holes with the White Hart offering a family feel pub or for a lively evening head to the Beachcomber Bar where you can enjoy Irish music or more modern tunes depending on the night of the week.

There are many activities to enjoy from Deep Sea Fishing, water sports, golf and horse riding so there is plenty to do within easy reach.

Culturally Donegal boasts a rich history from the 16th century Abbey in Rathmullan to the 19th century Glebe Gallery in Churchill. It was from the pier in Rathmullan that the last of the clan leaders left the country for good and it was the flight of the Earls in 1607 that is seen as the beginning of Modern Irish History.

Local Historian Deidre Friel works closely with Rathmullan House and in the summer months conducts historical tours of Rathmullan and Ramelton. These tours paint a vivid picture of how Rathmullen played its part in Irish history and the many characters that have been involved over the centuries.
