All Quiet on the Western Front

Preserved world war 1 trenches with concrete sandbags and ladders depicting life in the trenches/

More than 750,000 British Soldiers were killed on the Western Front during the Great War. During this Centenary period, join us on this introductory tour visiting the major battlefields of Flanders and France

4 nights accommodation with continental breakfast

Day 1 - Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in Belgium or northern France for a four-night stay.

Day 2 - Today we cover the battles that took place in the part of Belgium known as Flanders, close to the iconic Passchendaele battlefield. We visit many sights including: Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British War Cemetery in the world. Sanctuary Wood, with its preserved trenches. Hill 60, where we learn about the war underground. Landmark German Cemetery, where we learn how Germany commemorated their dead. Our day ends in Ypres where we attend the moving Last Post Cemetery at the Menin Gate Memorial held at 8pm each evening.

Day 3 - The "Forgotten Front" between Flanders and the Somme saw fierce fighting. Today we will visit Loos Battlefield, the first major British WW1 offensive. Vimy Ridge, where we examine the Canadian assault in 1917. Wellington Quarries, where we go underground to see where thousand sheltered on the eve of the battle. Arras Memorial, where we pay tribute at the Air Service Memorial to those who fought in the skies.

Day 4 - The Battle of the Somme saw Britain's blackest day, where 57,000 became casualties, and also saw the first use of tanks. We look at these stories during our day. Peronne, an excellent museum about the great war. La Boiselle, the largest British mine crater surviving on the battlefields. Thiepval, the impressive Memorial to the Missing. Newfoundland, with its original trenches. Delville Wood, the South Africans' bloodiest battle.

Day 5 - To Calais, then return home.
