Coastal Classic Alaska Rail
Enroute to Talkeetna
Denali and Talkeetna rail trip
For over 90 years, the Alaska Railroad has helped to connect people and places across Alaska. They offer vacation packages that include rail transportation, tours and hotels in the most popular, memorable destinations across Alaska.
Summer trains include
Coastal Classic Train: Offering round-trip service from Anchorage to Girdwood and Seward. This train winds through beautiful Alaskan wilderness on the southern portion of the Railbelt, offering amazing views of mountains, glaciers and the Place River Valley.
Denali Star Train: The flagship train, connecting Anchorage and Fairbanks with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali National Park; the busy summer season sees both a northbound and southbound Denali Star Train each day. This route reveals dramatic changes in the landscape as the train journeys toward the rugged peaks of the Alaska Range. Weather permitting; guests aboard the Denali Star also enjoy breath-taking views of Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America.
Glacier Discovery Train: Offering round-trip service connecting Anchorage to Girdwood, Portage, Whittier, Spencer Glacier and Grandview. This schedule offers a multitude of unique day trip options: guests may access glacier cruises in Prince William Sound, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre in Portage, rafting, hiking and ice climbing at the backcountry Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop, or simply enjoy the full length of the ride to scenic Grandview.
Hurricane Turn Train: One of the last flagstop trains in the country, the Hurricane Turn Train serves as the sole means of transportation for a stretch of roadless backcountry along a 55-mile expanse north of Talkeetna. Passengers can get off the train anywhere they please and hop back on for their return journey with the wave of a flag, although many passengers prefer to stay on the train to enjoy views of the panoramic turnaround point, Hurricane Gulch. Common stops for this round-trip flagstop train include Chase, Curry, Sherman, Gold Creek, Twin Bridges and Chulitna.
Winter trains include
Aurora Winter Train: The Aurora Winter Train departs Anchorage Saturdays with stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Healy en-route to the final destination of Fairbanks; Sunday, the train makes the return journey southbound. In late February and the month of March, this weekend service is accompanied by a northbound train on Tuesday and southbound train on Wednesday, offering passengers more opportunities to experience the Last Frontier in winter.
Hurricane Turn Train: Unlike its summer counterpart, the winter Hurricane Turn train originates in Anchorage, although the final destination is the same: 55 miles north of Talkeetna at Hurricane Gulch. This train is favoured by locals for its flagstop accessibility, and by visitors as a full-day round-trip train adventure from Anchorage.
The Alaska Railroad offers two classes of passenger service: Adventure Class and GoldStar Class .
The Alaska Railroad’s premium GoldStar Service offers passengers an exceptional way to travel in the last frontier. These bi-level cars feature glass dome ceilings and an outdoor, upper-level viewing platform – the only of its kind in the world – ensuring incredible views of the wild landscapes along the tracks. Your knowledgeable local tour guides and attentive bartenders enhance the journey with excellent service. On the lower level, a full-service dining room serves freshly prepared meals.
The Adventure Class cars offer comfortable seating and large picture windows. Open-air vestibules between railcars provide an opportunity for fresh air and excellent photo opportunities. Adventure Class guests are encouraged to travel between railcars, whether to take advantage of the open seating in the Vista Dome cars or visit the Wilderness Café.
Please note that GoldStar Service is only available on the Coastal Classic and Denali Star Trains; Adventure Class seating is available on every Alaska Railroad route.
Dining and bar service is available on all Alaska Railroad routes with the exception of the Hurricane Turn Train. GoldStar Service is all-inclusive of meals, soft drinks and two complimentary adult beverages.
