Mullingar is located in the heart of the county and has a main street lined with small shops if you’re looking for something unique. The town enjoys a vibrant music scene, theatrical tradition and sporting heritage.

Belvedere House and Gardens, just outside Mullingar is a restored Georgian villa set in 160 acres of parkland. Located on the shores of Lough Ennel the estate hosts numerous events throughout the year and provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the experience of ‘The Big House’ as well as the beauty created by visionary garden designers.

About a 30 minute drive from Mullingar you will find the village of Fore where visitors can view the site where St Frechin founded a Christian monastery in the 7th century. Amongst the remains you will find one of the 18 Fore crosses that spread out over 10km on roadways and fields.

Tullynally Castle and Gardens offer guided tours of the unique collection of furniture and pictures, the Victorian kitchen, laundries and the gardens. The castle also offers music concerts throughout the year which are held in the Great Hall.

Athlone, a designated historic town is known as the ‘Gateway to the West’ and the castle is a major attraction which features a visitor centre and the Luan Art Gallery. There are two historic town walking trails and the town is the start of the Lough Ree touring route.

Visit Ireland’s oldest distillery that still produces Kilbeggan whiskey and be transported back two centuries to see how Irish whiskey was made in the past before a stroll across the courtyard to the present day and the obligatory taste of Kilbeggan’s finest.

Whatever you decide to do Westmeath is the ideal place to explore so take time out for yourself and enjoy what this lovely county has to offer.
