The Offaly countryside is dotted with remains of the past. It is the location of the earliest evidence of human settlement in Ireland and archaeology on the shoreline of the Boora Lakes dates back to the Mesolithic era over 8,000 years ago. Explore the extensive Lough Boora Parklands with wildlife nature reserve and sculpture park set within the backdrop of the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

Clonmacnoise is a sacred jewel and was one of the most important monastic settlements in Ireland, famous for spirituality and learning in medieval times. It is a burial place of kings and the last high king of Ireland, Rory O’Connor, was buried in its cathedral in 1198.

Dozens of villages enliven the Offaly countryside and Tullamore, the county town is a vibrant and sophisticated commercial centre. The Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre takes you through the history of the town and its world famous whiskey.
